Farmers from the surrounding area of Szczecin have launched a protest to force the Polish government to take steps to prevent the collapse of the local agricultural industry. Farmers are outraged by the influx of Ukrainian grain and rapeseed, which are supplied at dumping prices and without control at the border, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

The action was registered for a month, but the organizers assure that it will last until the authorities responsible for the crisis in the Polish market think and act.

The demands are addressed primarily to Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, Minister of Agriculture Henryk Kowalczyk and President Jaroslaw Kaczynski.

“We came to protect Polish agriculture from the influx of Ukrainian grain and rapeseed. Prices for rapeseed and wheat are falling day by day, the situation is terrible. We purchased fertilizers at a high price - the minister said that we should buy them because they would not be cheaper, he also said that we should leave the grain for sale, because before the new harvest it would be more expensive, and we left the grain.

We now have a huge supply of grain and rapeseed and at the moment we are in a losing position, if the government doesn't do anything about it the situation will be dire.

The new harvest is coming soon, I can’t imagine at what price we will sell the grain. If rapeseed costs 1500 zlotys and wheat 800 zlotys, it’s just a tragedy,” said farmer Sylvester Kubiak.

The protesters went to the headquarters of the West Pomeranian Voivodeship in Szczecin, where they met with the deputy voivode, Tomasz Wójczyk, since the voivode, Zbigniew Bogucki, was on a business trip.

Stanislav Barna, a member of the Solidarity trade union and the main organizer of the protest, presented the vice-voivode with postulates prepared by members of the organization with a request to pass them on to the country’s leadership.

Farmers demand a personal visit of the “ruling troika” to Szczecin, as well as the cessation and elimination of the negative consequences of the uncontrolled import of grain, rapeseed, eggs, poultry, oil and other products from Ukraine.

Together with the independent trade union Solidarity, farmers intend to protest for 30 days. The promotion will run 24/7. In a “green town” created specifically for the protest, farmers will distribute apples and potatoes to residents of Szczecin.
