The State Duma plans to reconsider the decision made under Gorbachev
The State Duma intends to reconsider the political assessment of the participation of Soviet troops in the war in Afghanistan.
The Russian parliament believes that the assessment by Soviet deputies in 1989 and condemnation of the deployment of troops was “historically unfair.”
State Duma deputy Dmitry Belik reported this on his blog, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to him, deputies came to such conclusions during parliamentary hearings dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan.
“On February 15, 2019, the lower house of parliament may consider the Resolution of the State Duma, which will give a political assessment of the stay and withdrawal of a limited contingent of Soviet troops from the DRA... Most experts at the past hearings admitted that the condemnation in 1989 at the Congress of People's Deputies of the USSR of the decision to introduce Soviet troops into Afghanistan was historically unfair. Today the State Duma must correct this injustice, this distortion of information, when society is instilled with a sense of guilt, questions remain unanswered,” Belik said.
Previously, Special Representative of the Russian President for Afghanistan, Director of the Second Department of Asian Countries of the Russian Foreign Ministry Zamir Kabulov stated that Moscow believes The US campaign in Afghanistan has failed, and therefore Washington needs to withdraw its troops from this country.
