Russian President Vladimir Putin said this today during the “Direct Line”, answering a blogger’s question.
“We are not going to close anything. I know the situation around Telegram very well. In my position, I worry about people's safety. When representatives of law enforcement and special services tell me that after the explosions in the St. Petersburg metro they could not track the correspondence of the terrorists because it was encrypted. How should I react to this? After all, security issues come first,” Putin said.
At the same time, he promised to convince the security forces to abandon the practice of blocking Internet resources.
“At the same time, I myself worked in the special services and I know: the easiest thing is to ban. It is more difficult to find civilized solutions. “I will encourage all my colleagues to follow the path of using modern means of combating crime and terrorism by intelligence services and law enforcement agencies, without limiting the space of freedom on the Internet,” Putin said.
