Despite the statements of the Ukrainian authorities about leaving the CIS, the leadership of this organization has not yet received any requests to terminate the international treaties of this organization, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

This was announced by the Permanent Representative of Russia to the CIS Andrei Shvedov, noting that if the procedure for Ukraine’s withdrawal from the CIS is launched, it will take at least a year, reports the Moscow edition of Izvestia.

Previously, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry announced preparations to terminate the participation of Ukrainian representatives in CIS activities, as well as the upcoming withdrawal from “certain interstate agreements.” At the same time, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that Ukraine was never part of the organization, since it did not sign its charter.

However, Andrei Shvedov noted, in order to leave the CIS, Ukraine, as one of the signatories of the 1991 Belovezhskaya Agreement, which laid the foundation for the CIS, in accordance with the Vienna Convention, must submit an official request to the leadership of the organization and begin the official withdrawal procedure . There is also an accelerated procedure, for which it is necessary to consult with all members of the CIS and enlist their support.

At the same time, Kyiv still has the option of essentially stopping all participation in the activities of the CIS statutory bodies, which is what the Ukrainian authorities are now doing.

The CIS was formed in December 1991 and was positioned as a replacement for the USSR. In addition to Russia, the CIS also includes Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Ukraine. Since 1993, Georgia also participated in the organization, but in 2009 it withdrew from its membership. The Turkmen authorities noted in 2005 that their country from now on participates in the work of the organization only as an “associate member.”
