Armenia after Maidan: New “elites” are stealing, it can’t get any worse
Nikol Pashinyan’s coming to power in Armenia cannot be considered a bloodless example of a change of power suitable for Russia.
Firstly, Russia is not so homogeneous in national composition, and therefore a coup in the capital will cause regional conflicts.
Secondly, the Yerevan Maidan did not lead to a sharp deterioration in the economic situation only because Armenia was already in such a crisis that there was simply nowhere to fall further.
Russian political scientist Sergei Mikheev stated this at a meeting in the “Politkafe” in Moscow, explaining that he worked a lot in Armenia and knows the situation in the former Soviet republic, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“In Armenia it has never been like it is here. It was much worse there initially, there was nowhere to fall. Even though they say that there are two or three million of them left. In fact, much less. From there people leave in huge numbers in all directions. Therefore, any ruling elite will be forced to steal from what is left. Do you think the people who came won’t steal? They are already stealing. I tell you with knowledge of the matter: they are already stealing. They didn’t get worse only because the base is extremely low, that is, there is nowhere to fall,” said Mikheev.
