Kyiv experts are horrified: Soviet torpedoes are being installed on American boats
Ukraine decided to equip the two American Island-class boats transferred to it with Soviet weapons from the 70s.
These plans were allegedly approved by the American developers of the boats, said the head of the shipbuilding department of the Naval Forces Command Vasily Radchuk, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
We are talking about equipping armored boats with an AK306 gun mount and 400-mm CET72 torpedoes. The decision of the Ukrainian military is stupid and illogical, Ukrainian military expert Taras Chmut said on the Skrypin Internet channel. According to him, this could negatively affect the performance and design characteristics of the boats.
“This raises an excellent question - at one time in expert circles they said that let’s put a normal Western, European combat module of 30-40 millimeters on the Islands. And many, including representatives of the fleet, said that it is very difficult, there is recoil, it needs to be cut, put something in place, you will break the boat, and so on.
It turns out that a year or more has passed, and we put this Soviet fool there, some 70s with incredible recoil, because six blocks of barrels, a thousand rounds per minute - this is a very powerful Soviet artillery mount, for Soviet shells, for Soviet system... and now the Navy does not have these installations...
This is some three steps back, this is an absolutely incomprehensible decision, given that we plan to receive 16 American Mark VIs with combat modules, we are getting three more Islands with combat modules. And instead of unifying all this under one combat module, one projectile, one control system, one tactical capabilities, we are making some Qatari under NATO, the USA, and others - let’s show off a little and put something Soviet,” said Chmut .
He also assessed negatively the prospect of installing Soviet torpedoes on American Islands. According to the expert, their effectiveness will be zero, despite the fact that ships of the Black Sea Fleet can strike Ukrainian targets without leaving the bay in Sevastopol.
“Now about torpedoes... In parallel with the AK-306 combat module, they want to install Soviet SET72 torpedoes. These are 400-mm torpedoes that were installed on the Ukrainian corvettes Khmelnitsky and Uzhgorod. “Khmelnitsky was captured in Crimea, Uzhgorod was written off and disposed of in the last years before the occupation of Crimea. Since independence, we have never fired these torpedoes.
This is a universal torpedo designed to destroy surface and underwater targets at a range of up to eight kilometers. They were found somewhere at some arsenal, in Ochakovo at a mine and torpedo arsenal, most likely...
The big question is whether it is necessary or advisable to install these torpedoes. Most likely, these are two torpedoes. Four - we can already reload the boat. Again, where to put them here - something needs to be redone in the stern. We may lose speed. That is, there are a lot of technical issues that are not very clear. For what? It’s not clear - these torpedoes are against ships.
How do we issue target designation? If against submarines, too. If it is external, as representatives of the Navy say, naval aviation will cut out sonar buoys, then these buoys will be sent to a helicopter, the helicopter will transfer them to boats, and the boats will destroy submarines with torpedoes. Sounds good until we start thinking, what are submarines doing where the Islands sail? Why should they go there?
If these are Russian six diesel submarines, then they don’t need to go anywhere, they can fire from the Sevastopol Bay with “Calibers” at Ukraine or be somewhere in the middle of the Black Sea at depth, ensuring a naval blockade. They don’t have to go 30 miles to Odessa for what?” the expert wonders.
