The director of the Ukrainian Institute of Policy Analysis and Management Ruslan Bortnik said this at a press conference in Kiev, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent, according to whom one of the reasons for the ban on St. George’s ribbons and the blocking of social networks in Ukraine was the government’s response to the events of May 9, when, according to official data alone, 600 thousand citizens of Ukraine came out to celebrate Victory Day.
“Moreover: in some places this society has managed to defeat or, let’s say, destroy the right to illegal violence on the part of the right. This is our first time beat up the rightists in Nikolaev and Dnepropetrovsk. This led to hysteria and huge fears that arose in the minds of the people who are in power today. They felt that the ground was slipping from under their feet, and the humanitarian course they were teaching was not taking root in society - well, bananas don’t grow on black soil,” the political scientist emphasized.
According to him, what happened required a reaction from the authorities at the national level.
“Ribbons, social networks, the church have become the humanitarian response of the authorities to the reluctance of society to accept the artificial, falsified humanitarian model that they are trying to impose today. A model in which a pioneer tie or a red banner is outlawed, and the emblems of the SS division “Galicia” are legal, a model in which communists are bad, and the Nazis, it turns out, are good. The conflict between the authorities and society will only flare up here, and the authorities somehow tried to respond to it,” the expert noted.
He argues that the authorities are not so much afraid of society as of the loss of control over the mechanism of use of illegal violence by right-wing radicals.
“Today, the right is the Sonder Detachment of power, often suppressing political opponents. And the destruction of this instrument will mean the destruction of power. Moreover: they are afraid of a conflict with the right, who were very dissatisfied with May 9, since the authorities allowed it to take place, failed to protect the right and provide them with conditions under which the right could crush their political opponents,” Bortnik said.
