“Today, many sitting here know very well: we had to work in the fateful years of the formation of the new Russian Federation. Today I want to remember, on behalf of the people of Tatarstan and personally, my deep gratitude to his blessed memory - Boris Nikolayevich Yeltsin, and members of the government of the Russian Federation, and all those who solved difficult problems, and subsequently for many years with you,” Shaimiev said.
This excursion into history is obviously connected with the desire of the elite of Tatarstan to renegotiate the Agreement on the delimitation of jurisdiction and powers between government bodies of the Russian Federation and government bodies of Tatarstan.
Political scientist Aidar Mubarakzyanov believes that the agreement today is an atavism from the era of the collapse of the USSR and the “parade of sovereignties.”
“It is not difficult to imagine how this elite will behave if a political crisis begins in the country. All these “talented business executives” and “heroes of labor” will be the first to declare that only an agreement binds Tatarstan with Russia, and will present their conditions to the political leaders in Moscow,” Mubarakzyanov writes in the Eurasia.Daily publication.
