The US wants to control the counting of votes in the Ukrainian elections
The United States sees the re-election of the Central Election Commission as one of the priorities in Ukraine, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This was stated by US Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch in an interview with the Kyiv magazine Focus.
“Our priority is the re-election of the Central Election Commission. The current Central Election Commission still employs people from the Yanukovych era (ex-President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych - ed.). It is necessary to attract qualified and independent specialists who can ensure a normal electoral process,” Yovanovitch said.
In her opinion, Ukraine should also work on strengthening the electoral system, in particular, adopt the Electoral Code, as well as “introduce liability for bribery of voters, provide candidates with equal access to the media, and eliminate the possibility of using administrative resources.”
Commenting on information about alleged US support for individual candidates in the elections in Ukraine, Yovanovitch assures: “We are not involved in supporting candidates, our task is to help ensure open elections and a fair democratic process.”
