The US puts an end to the “president” of Kosovo
Political scientist and professor at the University of Pristina Nijmedin Spahiu is confident that the West will not involve the war criminal Hashim Thaci, whom the special prosecutor's office of the international tribunal has brought charges against, in the negotiations with Serbia.
The expert stated this to the Kosovo-online portal, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The EU and the US are now together in the negotiation process,” says Nijmedin Spahiu. “The Americans are formally mediators, and the basis is negotiations with Serbia about the price that Belgrade demands for recognition of Kosovo.”
When asked what role in the process of dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina will be assigned to the “President” of Kosovo Hashim Thaci after an indictment was brought against him in The Hague for involvement in massacres, torture and kidnappings, Spahiu noted that Thaci no longer plays the role of a negotiator.
“On July 4, on the Independence Day of the United States, in Pristina, the American ambassador raised the American flag together with the Speaker of the Kosovo Parliament, Vjosa Osmani, and not with the President of Kosovo,” the political scientist recalled.
Speaking about the possibility of partitioning Kosovo, Spahiu called it “an old idea from Belgrade.”
“It is always either on the table or under the table until Serbia recognizes Kosovo. This idea was accepted by Thaçi and US President Donald Trump's former national security adviser John Bolton, but they are no longer on the political scene,” Spahiu said.
A new round of negotiations between Serbia and Kosovo is expected to take place next Sunday in Brussels. Belgrade will be represented by President Aleksandar Vucic, and Pristina by “Prime Minister” Avdula Hoti.
