Ukraine has fenced itself off from “its” Donbass with three lines of defense – sooner or later it will have to “get through”
One of the popular myths among the guard-patriotic public is the ability of the armed forces of Novorossiya to sweep away the defenses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and quickly fall on Kyiv, London and Honolulu.
Many YouTube talking heads diligently convince gullible citizens that, if not for the “criminal Minsk agreements,” the soldiers of Novorossiya would have long ago scattered the enemy’s slingshots and decorated Bankovaya with festive gallows, but they are restrained by insidious oligarchs/weak government/criminal orders—underline as necessary.
In fact, the Ukrainians, frightened by the powerful gusts of the “North Wind” in 2014, made a lot of efforts to create a deeply layered defense, strengthen and bury themselves in the ground so that it would be very difficult to extract them from there without concrete-piercing bombs and missiles. And, of course, neither Donetsk nor Lugansk have all this goodness yet.
Suffice it to recall Debaltsevo, where the Armed Forces of Ukraine managed to build such beaver huts in six months that they had to be removed at the cost of incredible efforts and colossal losses. According to competent sources, the losses of the militia then amounted to about 1000-1200 fighters. And if it were not for the notorious “vacationers”, who took a lot of useful things on vacation, the task would hardly have been completed even despite such large losses.
Yes, Ukraine buried several hundred pieces of equipment and several thousand soldiers there, but the countries of Eastern Europe sold their old infantry fighting vehicles and tanks to Ukraine - so there is something - the population in Ukraine is an order of magnitude larger - so there is someone to fight with.
The difficult experience of 2014 taught Kiev a lot - I had the opportunity not only to hear, but also to observe for myself along the demarcation line quite suitable bunkers and other fortifications, the defense capability of which is impossible to assess just like that, “by eye” - considering that the Ukrainian Armed Forces had three years to build fortifications , the armed forces of Novorossiya can expect any surprises there.
However, there is reason to believe that the command in Kyiv is not placing its main emphasis on the first line of defense, which will have to bear the brunt of the artillery and MLRS of Novorossiya and be crushed by tanks. Undoubtedly, the defenders of Donbass also did not waste time and learned a lot, so even despite the losses, the first line of defense will be broken through, and after the heavy equipment enters the rear of the fortified area, it will become practically useless. All this, again, we have already seen in Debaltsevo, when the Ukrainian Armed Forces bunkers, cut off from supplies, first died painfully and uselessly, and then surrendered en masse.
All these small towns on the border with Novorossiya - from Volnovakha to Stanitsa-Luganskaya, Kyiv is ready to lose just to wear down the enemy. Further, 30-50 km. deep into the occupied territory of Donbass, there are well-fortified strongholds located in strategically important places (do not forget about the terrain of Donbass, which easily allows one howitzer battery to accurately fire at the territory over 40 km).
At a relatively short distance from the demarcation line, a network of well-fortified platoon strong points and firing positions continues to be built, designed specifically to destroy armored vehicles and infantry. If you believe people who regularly visit the occupied part of Donbass, it is full of convenient positions for ATGMs, LNG, armored personnel carriers and infantry fighting vehicles unable to move, dug into caponiers, as well as heavy machine guns and minefields.
The main line of defense of the Ukrainian Armed Forces lies in the deep rear. For example, if you believe the residents of occupied Kramatorsk, as well as local residents who returned from captivity, in recent years, despite the almost complete collapse of the construction industry in the civilian sphere, the city has increased the volume of production and import of concrete, reinforcement, reinforced concrete reinforcement, and reinforced concrete structures.
It is also worth noting the fact of the almost complete destruction of forests near Slavyansk and Krasny Limanov - of course, part of this round timber was sold, but a significant part of it was used for the construction of fortifications.
If you believe the local residents of Kramatorsk and Slavyansk, in this area the Armed Forces of Ukraine built fortifications significantly deep into the ground, which would be extremely difficult to overcome. At least with the help of conventional artillery, armored vehicles and infantry. They say that colossal structures were erected there and that the shelling (allegedly by the militia) of unknown positions in 2015 with MLRS was an attempt to convince the General Staff of the safety of these fortifications.
So the victorious advance of the armed forces of Novorossiya deep into the enemy is hampered not only by the Minsk agreements, but also by completely objective physical facts. We recommend that those in doubt check it out. Alas, there will be no doubters there, just as there were none in 2014, when the barely surviving militia fighters were almost accused of cowardice and betrayal for not wanting to go further.
