The reporter interviews at the firing lines during the shelling: Ivan, a local resident whose village is five kilometers from the collision zone; Andrei, a Soviet special forces soldier who, as a free volunteer, strives to be useful to the militia as an instructor; from Anna, a former successful store owner, and today the commander of an infantry “brigade”; from Sergei Fomchenko, the former military commander of the school in the village of Spartak; from his wards, fifteen-year-old students of this school, who now assemble a Kalashnikov assault rifle in nine seconds; among civilians affected by shelling.

Bullets are literally whistling overhead. “At least one militia member is killed every day. Positional trench warfare continues here according to the same rules as a hundred years ago. There should be thousands of Russian soldiers in this place, the same ones that officials from the State Department tell us about. But they are invisible. There are none,” says Nick Shifrin.

“Do you imagine the possibility of returning your territory back to Ukraine?” - he asks everyone in turn, and everyone unanimously says that Ukraine is alien to them, and that they want their territory to become part of Russia, and they perceive their struggle as a continuation of the heroic struggle of their ancestors against Nazi Germany.

“The militias only have enough strength for defense, and therefore this military conflict in such a frozen state can last indefinitely,” the journalist concludes.
