This opinion is expressed in an article published on the website of the online publication “Apostrophe” by Odessa Maidan artist Alexander Roitburd, assessing the attempt of the Odessa City Council to cancel the scandalous order to rename streets and return some Soviet names to them.

He admits that in the renaming of Odessa streets under Saakashvili, “there was still a certain bias towards the universal Ukrainian myth” and believes that it would be “more organic to create a kind of dialogue between state mythology and some kind of local, local memory” so that the renamings would be better perceived by townspeople.

“I proposed limiting renaming to Odessa cultural figures. They were perpetuated, but on very peripheral streets. At the same time, Odessa crossed out what was sacred for the state (the same “Heavenly Hundred”) and clung to Soviet cults. What kind of person can Valentina Tereshkova be today with her support for the annexation of Crimea? This is the enemy of our country. Her space flights were a long time ago, and these events are now. This man, by supporting aggression against Ukraine, erased all the good things that could be remembered.

After all, the majority of citizens are passive, and the proposal to discuss possible options for renaming streets could lead to heightened passions between the patriotic public and apologists of the “Russian world.” Most of the townspeople are very conservative, they are used to living on Valentina Tereshkova Street,” Roitburd is indignant.

However, as PolitNavigator reported, the local court in Odessa canceled according to the claim of the Maidan workers returning part of the city streets to Soviet names and returning the “heavenly hundred”.

We also said that The SBU saw a return to the streets of Odessa names of Zhukov, Gaidar and Tereshkova “war propaganda”.
