The chairman of the mission, Fiona Fraser, stated this today in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, during the presentation of the report of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine.
“In Donetsk, I saw the gap widen as the territory under the control of armed groups became more isolated. Disproportionate restrictions on freedom of movement significantly affect an average of 23 thousand people every day and more than 700 thousand people every month. We must recognize that such restrictions deepen the division of communities and can harm the establishment of peace in Ukraine,” the UN representative said.
At the same time, she welcomed some “government efforts to improve access to socio-economic rights throughout Ukraine, including for internally displaced persons.”
“At the same time, we emphasize that at least 160 thousand pensioners living in territories controlled by armed groups have been deprived of their pensions since November 2014,” Fraser noted. – The report encourages the government to ensure everyone has access to their social benefits. We recommend that the government break the link between the right to receive a pension and registration of internally displaced person status.”
